1. Best weather for trout. Cloudy and slightly cold weather is always a good bet for trout. They like cold, oxygenated water, and they're not very fond of sunny weather and hot days. If it's been hot weather for a week or more, without any rain, always look for places on a river, with waterfalls and rapids. On the other hand, after a good rain, during summer, the water will take a good amount of oxygen and their feeding activity will increase.

Windy is also good, as wind oxygenates the water. However, under windy conditions casting and also observing the flies is troublesome. So, choose your position carefully and work with heavier, wet flies.

2. Choose your flies carefully. In fact, any trout angler should have his own fly-tying kit, and master the art of tying his own flies. That's because sometimes you just have to improvise and make a fly on the spot, one similar to some bugs that are on the river bank and you see trout catching them.

When going on a certain lake or river for the first time, it's not a bad idea to visit a local bait and tackle shop and ask the people there what usually works. They will surely give you the best advice.

As for me, I've always got some nice trout with black, Palmer flies and brownish nymphs of all kinds. Keep in mind that over 2/3 of the trout's diet is actually in the water not above it, and you might have better success with wet flies.

3. Don't neglect the gear. To maximize your trout fishing experience, it's best to have a balanced tackle. A 7'6" light or ultra-light, fast or medium-fast action is the rod to go with, paired with a fly reel that will balance it. In other words, if you attach the reel to the fully assembled rod, the balance point should be right above the handle. Anyway, if you're looking for specifics on a fully balanced trout rod-reel-line, I found a few nice recommendations, here: http://hummingbirdfishfinderreviews.com/how-to-catch-rainbow-trout-trout-tackle/.

Make sure you also wear the right clothes. Avoid yellow, pink, red or white shirts or caps, wear green and brown, and try to blend in the environment. Also, even though many trout anglers have their waders on when trout fishing, to move through the stream, and find better spots to cast, it's not exactly the best choice. Fish feel your movement through the water, so it's best to stay out of the water as much as possible.
